Tapa Stand is a unique culinary experience. We provide our customers with a taste of Spain through our tapas and paellas. Chef Alvaro and his team are inspired by the old-world traditions of Spanish cuisine and are proud to cook with the finest ingredients from Spain as well as locally sourced produce.
Tapas
Tapas are small plates of food that are served between meals and often accompanied by a beverage. Tapas originated in Spain. According to the legend, King Alfonso X, The Wise King of Spain, had once been struck with a serious illness where he could only eat small portions of food with a small amount of wine. After recovering from his illness, the King issued a decree that no wine could be served unless it was served with food. Tapas are the perfect way to experience the flavors and rich culture of Spain. The most important thing about “tapeo” (the art of eating tapas), is the gathering of people to socialize as they eat and drink.
Paella
The Spanish name paella refers to both the pan and the rice dish itself. Paella is meant to bring people together. The dish is intended to be shared, making it one of the most sociable and enjoyable culinary experiences ever. Paella is a feast of flavors, textures and colors that will transport you straight to Spain. We only use the finest ingredients and Spanish spices that make this dish unforgettable.

From an early age, Álvaro enjoyed the smell and the joy of what a kitchen brings the family. It is a place to spend time cooking while making memories and sharing delicious dishes.
Álvaro graduated from Escuela Superior de Hosteleria y Turismo in Madrid, one of the most prestigious culinary schools in the country. He has worked at several restaurants, hotels and even for the Ambassador of the United States Embassy in Spain prior to moving to the U.S.
He moved to San Diego in 2016 and instantly realized that sharing his culture, culinary experience and cooking Spanish cuisine with his new friends brought them together.
He believes that food connects people and creates unique experiences. This is the way he would like to share a part of his beloved country with San Diego.
